My fave TV drama of all time...
...is NOT "My Name is Kim Sam Soon", to be truthful.
I only realised that when I got addicted to this HK drama called “Game of Deceit”, again.
Yeah, this is not the first time I got addicted to this drama. When it premiered in Astro's channel 30 (it was channel 16 then) five years ago, I was SO into it I had to watch every episode as many times as they would rerun it, which means three times per episode. I even woke up in the middle of the night to catch it. It was WAY serious than my Kim Sam Soon addiction.
Now that it's airing in TVB XingHe, I'm doing the same thing. Watching every episode for at least two times per day, five days per week.
Which is a very, very weird thing to do. In fact, I don't even understand why I'd have liked the drama so much in the first place. It's not half as meaningful as Kim Sam Soon. And Nick Cheung is SO NOT Hyun Bin (I mean his looks. Nick's acting skills are better than Binnie's). And Jessica Hester Hsuan is......well, erm......I'll have to be honest. Personally, I'd choose Jessica over Kim Suna. Not because Suna is not good enough, of course. It's just that......Jessica is my ultimate role model. She's very pretty and she's a genius. I know Suna majored in Piano in Ball State University, Indiana, which makes her smart as well. But come on, Jessica graduated from University of London, Imperial College, majoring in Engineering, as one of the top students. I don't know how she could do Algebra in her head and be so good in acting at the same time. Seriously, I'd give anything to get admission to University of London (not Imperial College though. That's for science. I'm aiming UCL). I'd give anything to be as smart as her.
Anyway, back to the topic. I mean, it's not like “Game of Deceit” is a multi-award-winning drama like Kim Sam Soon. The script is not well-written, although it did give the audience many surprises. It's just another typical TVB production, made to earn money from commercials. A commercialized drama made to entertain......
Then again, maybe that is the point of making TV dramas. To entertain, I mean. “Game of Deceit” definitely succeeded in entertaining. Although Nick Cheung and Jessica Hsuan acting as a couple might not seem like a good idea at first, their chemistry turned out to be really good in the drama, just like Kim Suna and Hyun Bin in KSS. Besides, which Hong Kong actor could be funnier than Nick Cheung?
Here's the final episode of "Game of Deceit":
Call me lame, but I've always liked Nick Cheung as an actor. He's passionate in every production and he's the BEST comedian ever. And he sings pretty well too (I've uploaded his song to this blog).
I'd go as far as saying he's one of the most underrated actors in HK. With his talent and dedication, he should have won a Hong Kong Golden Film Award YEARS ago. I'm serious. You should look at his recent projects which took part in various international film festivals (Cannes film festival, Venice film festival etc.), such as "Breaking News", "The Election", "On The Edge" and the most recent "Exiled", which I'm actually half-way watching (I'm learning to appreciate award-winning films even though I can't understand the stories half the time. It's not an easy business to guard myself from falling asleep, coz there wasn't a single line from any actor for the first 15 mins of "Exiled", except the beginning part where Francis Ng went knocking on the door and asked "Is Ah Ho in?" and Josie Ho went "There's no such person.").
Trailer for "Exiled" (Oh by the way, like all the nicest movies ever produced, this movie is of course banned in our country. You know, it's really unfair that we have to watch these good movies on pirated DVDs when they were meant to be appreciated in cinemas):
